Characters Exclusive to the Book
The Unicorn
Well, It wouldn't be fair to name it "The Last Unicorn" if it were
about fish would it? I don't think so. The unicorn is the star of
the story and is never really given a name until she's human. She's
beautiful and very old, though that doesn't matter to her since she's
immortal and will never die. She has a little bit of trouble adjusting
to caring about time.
The Lady Amalthea
She and the unicorn are the same person to start with but as she is
trapped in her body longer she forgets and becomes human. As a human
she falls in love with prince Lir, unfortunately (?) they're forced
to separate because only a unicorn can save the other unicorns.
Shmendrick the Magician
Shmendrick the Magician is the first companion the unicorn comes into
contact with on her quest. He's a rather incompentant magician who
messes up most of the spells he tries to do. The only thing he wishes
is to have full command of his magic. But he genuinely cares about his
friends. In the book Shmendrick is immortal until he becomes a full
magician, but this isn't even hinted at in the movie.
Molly Grue
Molly Grue is the bitter significant other of the forest man Captain
Cully who joins the unicorn simply because she has waited all her life
to see one. She willingly works in the kitchen of Haggard's palace to
stay with the unicorn and is the one who learns the secret of finding
the Red Bull from the cat.
Prince Lir
Hero Boy. Ok ok, so I guess he isn't as bad as most of the guys I'd
normally call Hero Boy...that term is usually reserved for persons of
the male gender who don't deserve the admiration of their admirers. Lir
isn't really that bad I guess it's the longish blonde hair that does it.
He's a good enough hero and does it first to impress Amalthea and later
to help people. He loves her no matter what form she has but he can't
keep her.
The Cat
The Cat is the one who helps Molly learn the secret of finding the Red
Bull's lair. He's not really a major character but he's really funny.
In the movie he speaks with a piratey accent and has a unneeded eyepatch.
Note though: in the book Lir says if Haggard saw the cat he'd kill it,
but in the movie it's playing in the throne room when Shmendrick is
preforming.
